5 Common Sticker Mistakes You Should Avoid

Choosing sticker material may seem simple. But choosing the wrong material, or overlooking the application conditions, can lead to problems such as rework, poor appearance, adhesion issues or unnecessary replacement.

Before you order your next roll, here are five common sticker mistakes to avoid.

1. Choosing Based Only on Price

Price is important, but it shouldn’t be the only consideration.

A cheaper material may make sense for a shorter-term project. But if the project requires longer performance, choosing purely based on price may create additional costs later.

Think about the overall project cost, not just the price of the roll.

Ask yourself:

“Is this material suitable for what the customer actually needs?”

2. Using the Same Sticker for Every Job

Not every project has the same requirements.

A sticker used for a temporary indoor promotion doesn’t necessarily need the same material as a long-term outdoor graphic or vehicle application.

Before choosing your material, consider:

  • Where will it be used?
  • How long does it need to last?
  • What type of application is it?
  • What level of performance is required?

One sticker doesn’t fit every job.

3. Not Checking the Surface

The sticker isn’t the only thing you need to consider. The surface matters too.

Before applying, look at three things:

Surface Shape

Is the surface:

  • Flat?
  • Curved?
  • Textured?
  • With edges or contours?

A flat surface may have different requirements from a curved or more challenging surface. Make sure the material you choose is suitable for the application.

Surface Condition

Is the surface:

  • Clean?
  • Smooth?
  • Dusty?
  • Oily?
  • Previously stickered?
  • Damaged or uneven?

Proper surface preparation is important for good adhesion.

Paint or Coating

Applying onto a painted or coated surface?

Don’t simply assume it will work. Test first.

Different paints and coatings can behave differently and may affect how well an adhesive performs.

A simple approach is to:

Don’t just test the sticker. Test the surface too.

4. Forgetting About Project Duration

Ask yourself:

“How long does this need to last?”

A temporary promotional campaign and a long-term branding project shouldn’t automatically be treated the same way.

Knowing the expected lifespan helps you choose a material that matches the project.

For example, an economical material may be suitable when the project is short-term and the application requirements are straightforward.

For a longer-term project, a higher-grade material may be worth considering depending on the application.

Choose according to the expected lifespan, not just today’s price.

5. Choosing the Finish Without Thinking About the Application

Gloss and matte don’t just give your sticker a different look. The finish can also affect how the final graphic is perceived.

Before choosing, consider:

Where will it be viewed?

How much reflection is acceptable?

What visual effect does the customer want?

Sometimes, choosing the right finish can make a noticeable difference to the final appearance.

Before You Choose Your Sticker

Remember these five questions:

01 | WHERE?

Where will it be used?

02 | HOW LONG?

How long does it need to last?

03 | WHAT SURFACE?

Flat, curved, textured, painted or coated?

04 | WHAT LOOK?

Gloss, matte or another finish?

05 | WHAT BUDGET?

What level of material performance does the project actually require?

Once you know these, choosing the right material becomes much easier.

The Bottom Line

The goal isn’t to choose the most expensive sticker.

And it isn’t always about choosing the cheapest one either.

It’s about choosing a material that is suitable for the application, surface, expected lifespan and project requirements.

The right material. The right surface. The right application.
